Discover the Healing Power of Hypnotherapy in Cancer Care: A Natural Way to Manage Stress, Surgery, and Treatment Side Effects
When you're facing the challenges of cancer treatment, both physically and emotionally, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. While traditional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are necessary, they often bring along intense stress, anxiety, and difficult side effects. That’s where hypnotherapy can make a real difference—helping you find calm, resilience, and comfort when you need it most.
As a complementary therapy, hypnotherapy works alongside your medical treatments to improve your overall well-being, reduce discomfort, and empower you throughout your cancer journey.
A Personal Message from Dr. Hiro Koo
Hello, I’m Dr. Hiro Koo, a trauma-informed hypnotherapist. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many cancer survivors, helping them overcome emotional and physical challenges with hypnotherapy. Recently, I was honored to be invited by the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Department to speak on this very topic, where I shared how hypnotherapy is transforming the lives of patients during their cancer treatment.
Every day, I see how hypnotherapy helps my patients regain a sense of control over their bodies and emotions—whether it’s preparing mentally for surgery, managing treatment side effects, or simply finding a space of calm during an incredibly stressful time.
Let me walk you through how hypnotherapy can complement your cancer treatment and support your healing journey.
How Can Hypnotherapy Help You During Cancer Treatment?
1. Easing Stress and Anxiety
A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and the stress and anxiety that follow are often overwhelming. Hypnotherapy offers a space where you can deeply relax, allowing your mind and body to release tension and stress. By addressing the emotional toll of cancer, we can help reduce anxiety levels, leaving you feeling more in control and peaceful during this challenging time.
2. Supporting Pre and Post-Surgery
Facing surgery can bring up a lot of fear and uncertainty. With hypnotherapy, I help patients mentally prepare for surgery by guiding them into a calm, focused state that reduces anxiety and enhances the body’s natural healing response. Post-surgery, hypnotherapy aids in pain management, speeds recovery, and helps patients regain a positive outlook as they heal.
3. Alleviating Treatment Side Effects
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy, while critical to fighting cancer, often come with side effects like nausea, fatigue, and pain. Hypnotherapy combines with the cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy approach, we offer a natural way to manage these side effects, helping you feel more comfortable and better equipped to handle your treatment. Through guided visualization and relaxation techniques, we can work together to ease the discomfort and improve your overall well-being.
4. Building Emotional Resilience and Cope with Traumatic Stress
Cancer is not just a physical journey; it’s an emotional one too. Hypnotherapy helps you develop inner strength and emotional resilience, which is vital for coping with the ups and downs of treatment as well as the potential traumatic stress responses. Whether it’s managing fear, sadness, or frustration, hypnotherapy can empower you to stay positive and strong, even when things feel tough.
The Science Behind Hypnotherapy in Cancer Care
You might wonder how hypnotherapy works in the context of cancer care. Research has shown that hypnotherapy can help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain, making it a valuable tool in cancer treatment. It’s widely recognized in integrative oncology programs around the world for its ability to improve patient outcomes by enhancing emotional and physical well-being.
I’ve seen firsthand how patients feel more empowered and at ease when hypnotherapy is part of their treatment plan. By working with your subconscious mind, we can create positive changes in how you respond to stress, pain, and discomfort—making your cancer treatment journey more manageable.

This is believed to be the first nationally accredited hypnotherapy vocational education standard in Asia. In the future, obtaining this national accreditation will involve either traditional skill training education (2400 hours, with approximately 70% being practical training in applied techniques) or Recognition Prior Experience, a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of previously acquired knowledge and work experience.
How can hypnotherapy heal trauma?
Hypnotherapy induces a state of deep relaxation, which may be useful for healing from trauma.
Trauma is a universal human experience. A traumatic event may involve anything from interpersonal abuse to a natural disaster to the sudden death of a loved one.
When people struggle to process traumatic events or experiences, it can lead to certain mental health conditions or symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, flashbacks, and more.
Hypnosis, also called hypnotherapy, is a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration. It’s a type of mind-body treatment for trauma.
A trained and certified hypnotist or hypnotherapist guides you into this deep state of focus and relaxation with verbal cues, repetition, and imagery.
When you’re under hypnosis, this intense level of concentration and focus may allow you to ignore ordinary distractions and be more open to guided suggestions to make changes to improve your health.”
Through the help of a hypnotherapist, you may be able to heal certain symptoms related to trauma you’ve experienced.
Certain studies have shown hypnotherapy to be helpful in the treatment of trauma symptoms, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in some instances.
A meta-analysis of six studies on hypnotherapy found that hypnotherapy significantly reduced participants’ PTSD symptoms of intrusion and avoidance. Regardless of the nature of the trauma, participants who received hypnotherapy experienced a reduction in their symptoms.
However, not all studies used the same type of hypnotherapy, which compromised the findings.
Another study found that hypnotherapy can help reduce insomnia in those with combat-related PTSD. In fact, the study found that hypnotherapy, as an additive treatment, decreased intrusive and avoidance symptoms of PTSD and improved sleep.
Researchers have also found that hypnotherapy may be able to reduce depression symptoms. A study comparing the effectiveness of cognitive hypnotherapy, which is hypnosis combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), versus CBT alone, found that cognitive hypnotherapy was more effective in reducing depression, anxiety, and hopelessness.

How can trauma-informed hypnotherapy help in preventing mental illness?
Trauma-Informed Hypnotherapy has several advantages in preventing mental illness and improving risk factors:
Reduce anxiety and stress: Many studies have shown that long-term anxiety and stress are common risk factors for mental illness. Hypnotherapy can reduce anxiety and stress by promoting deep relaxation and improving emotional states, thereby reducing the risk of mental illness.
Improve sleep: Sleep disorders are a common symptom of many mental illnesses. Hypnotherapy can help improve sleep quality and reduce problems such as waking up at night and insomnia, thus helping to prevent the occurrence of mental illness.
Enhance self-awareness and cognitive control ability: Insufficient self-awareness and cognitive control ability are also common risk factors for mental illness. Hypnotherapy can help individuals better regulate their emotions and thoughts by strengthening self-awareness and cognitive control ability, thus reducing the risk of mental illness.
Increase psychological resilience: Psychological resilience refers to an individual's ability to adapt to stress and challenges. Hypnotherapy can help individuals cultivate stronger psychological resilience, making them more resilient and confident in the face of challenges and reducing the risk of mental illness.
In summary, Trauma-informed hypnotherapy can help in preventing mental illness and improve risk factors for mental health by reducing anxiety and stress, improving sleep, enhancing self-awareness and cognitive control ability, and increasing psychological resilience.
- 用”外物“如赌博、喝酒、毒品甚至性爱来”麻痹“创伤导致的身心反应,从而上瘾;
- 出现”一朝被蛇咬,十年怕井绳“的恐惧反应;
- 僵化的思维、行为或信念;
- 强烈避开某些与创伤事件相关的人事物之意愿;
- 无缘无故出现的恐慌反应;
- 自律神经失调反应;
- 多恶梦;
- 找回心理安全感-创伤导向催眠疗法会让你学会各种创伤知情催眠疗法与自我催眠技术,让你帮助因为创伤而长期处于没有安全干的个案,渐渐找回安全感;
- 创伤知情教育让个案找出问题根源-让个案更了解自己为何出现某些身心问题的导因甚至根源问题,有了觉知就可以更踏实的去应对;
- 学会找出创伤触发点的技术-创伤导向催眠治疗将会教导你各种潜意识探索工具,让你更有效地找出个案的创伤触发机制,并引导个案如何去处理之;
- 学会实用创伤知情催眠技术,教导个案改善创伤导致的身心状况-你将学会各种身心调整科技,帮助个案更好的调整他们目前棘手的身心状况,甚至教导个案各种创伤知情自我催眠技巧,让个案也可以学习自我疗愈技术,大大提升疗愈体验与满意度;
- 催眠能善用潜意识,疗愈消化创伤反应-因为催眠疗法本身就能善用潜意识疗愈问题的原理,我们可以更快速有效的消化储存在大脑潜意识里的创伤机制与反应。因为许多面对创伤的生还者,理性上都知道该怎么理性的去解决问题,但往往却被大脑潜意识所控制而感到身心层面的失控感;

Hypnotherapy as a professional occupation in the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) Malaysia
Hiro Koo, the clinical hypnotherapist from New Mind Brain Health Centre, is the first one who get approval to list and develop vocational training pathway for the title of "Hypnotherapy" in the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) under the Department of Skills Development (DSD), Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia.
Panic Attack Treatment Malaysia
Hiro Koo:
From my clinical work, I notice that most of my clients who suffer from autonomic nervous dysfunction symptoms such as panic attack or Irritable bowel syndrome tend to experience self-induced (hypnotic) trance states. Most of them show a certain type of brainwaves activity and they can be triggered and activated the fear response easily.
Dissociation is also known as a 'self-induced (hypnotic) trance states' or 'altered states of consciousness'. The sensations of dissociation are many and varied. They can easily experience the following dissociative sensations:
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Tunnel vision
- Feeling as if your body has expanded so that it feels larger than normal
- Feeling as if your body has shrunk to minute proportions
- Stationary objects may appear to move
- Driving a car and suddenly realise you don't remember what has happened during all or part of the trip
- Listening to someone talk and realise you did not hear part or all of what was said
- Sometimes sit staring off into space, and not being aware of the passage of time
For example, People who have panic disorder are not aware of how they can 'trance out' so easily, and they can then panic when they move into an altered state.
Some people with panic disorder are frightened of their ability to dissociate, other people are not. One of the easiest way people can induce a trance state is when they are relaxed and/or when they are staring : out of the window, driving, watching TV, reading a book, using the computer, when talking with someone. Fluorescent lights can trigger a trance state, so too can self-absorption. The more absorbed we become, the more we can induce a trance state.
Hiro Koo:
I notice that 'self-induced (hypnotic) trance states' happens to most to the clients who suffered from the symptoms of the autonomic nervous dysfunction. Thus, clinical hypnotherapy can help you to utilize your trance state in a proper and positive way. By doing clinical neurofeedback, it can help you to feel more in control as well.
If chest pain or difficulty breathing is new, severe or does not settle, call 999 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Support for panic-related difficulties is discussed on the New Mind services page.
