Success Story (Depression and Insomnia - Miss T)

If you think you may have insomnia, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do you wake up during the night and find that you cannot fall back asleep?
  • Do you lie in bed, tossing and turning for hours each night?
  • Do you dread going to bed because you feel like you never get a good night’s sleep?
  • Do you wake up feeling unrefreshed after sleeping?
  • Does the problem occur even though you have the opportunity and the time to get a good night’s sleep?
  • You are suffering from depression?
  • It takes you more than 30 mins to fall asleep?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then you may have insomnia. If you’ve had insomnia for more than three weeks (chronic insomnia), consider booking an appointment with a therapist.
Let's me share a testimonial that I get from my clients, this real story tell you how she improve her insomnia problem after doing her clinical hypnotherapy and EEG biofeedback therapy with me.

.................................................................................................................................................................

My client: T (22 years old), primarily came to see me for her stress issues. She has been diagnosed with depression and was prescribed with the antidepressants as well as sleeping pill by her Psychiatrist. However, She stopped her anti depressant and sleeping pill after using them for 3 weeks as she felt that she could not sleep even with the sleeping pills and she feels a lot more blur and slow in response after the antidepressants.
Her problem has influenced her life since she was young until to the extend that she had to stop herself from continuing her study due to her lack in  focus and emotional issues.
Upon analyzing her unique brainwave patterns and her response toward clinical hypnotherapy, I found that most of her brainwaves pattern (especially those brain locations which associated with focus, logical thinking, verbal expression and attention span) is under-arousal/weak.

Her brainwaves pattern is the reason why she was having problem as below:
  1. Depression symptoms
  2. Self harmful thoughts
  3. Insomnia
  4. Bad sleeping quality
  5. Negative thoughts
  6. Inability to express confidently
  7. Poor focus and attention span
Treatment Plan:
A customized self-hypnosis method was planned for her; She was guided on how to do self hypnosis effectively while her brainwaves was monitored. For the first session, 2 hours was spent with her to deal with her depression symptoms, negative thinking and self harmful thoughts issues.

Following is the result obtained:
After the first session, she confessed that it was the first time ever that she felt so calm and relaxed. She complied to practice her customized self hypnosis technique for positive thinking once a day until her next visit.
Two weeks later, the follow up session was carried out.
Following are the changes that she experiences after the 2 weeks practice of self hypnosis:

  1. Positive thinking
  2. More optimistic
  3. More confident to speak
  4. Ability to let go of past event
  5. Begin to look forward for a better future
  6. Less self harmful thoughts
  7. Become less anxious and stressful
  8. Become relax and calm
  9. Response speed increased

For her 3rd session, her objective is to improve her sleep quality and deal with her insomnia problem so that she can improve her overall life quality as well as her health condition. I guided her to do a customized self hypnosis technique for sleep and following is the result obtained:
During the session, she was able to fall asleep by doing her customized self hypnosis technique for sleep alone! As you can notice her Delta brainwaves for sleep increased after she did her self hypnosis technique (See the red cursor on the graph above) and her Hibeta was decreasing further too.

Upon the completion of the clinical hypnotherapy session, she came back to do EEG biofeedback therapy to improve her attention span and focus issue.
She shared her joy and improvement on the relevant issue. She found the following positive changes in her life after the therapy session:
  1. Feel more motivated to live better
  2. Easy to wake up in the morning, feeling refreshed
  3. More alert
  4. Increase in the respond speed
  5. Improvement in sleep quality (Able to sleep by doing customized self hypnosis and without the use of sleeping pill)
Remark:
Before she started the clinical hypnotherapy session, her depression screening test showed a score of 29 (Category: moderate to severe depression). After 3 sessions of clinical hypnotherapy, she now had a score of 9 (Category: none to mild depression).

10 Nutritional Deficiencies That Cause Depression and Mood Disorders

Depression and mood disorders are devastating health problems today. When you go to your doctor, their answer is often a prescription for one of the various popular anti-depressant drugs. Many doctors do not investigate for metabolic or nutritional deficiencies that may be the ‘real problem’ for your depression. Patients have no idea why they feel so awful or where to start looking for the answer. They expect their doctor to give them real solutions. Instead they get drugs as the easy fix. Drugs are not an easy fix because of the serious side effects that come with taking them. Doctors prescribe these drugs from information they get from the drug sales rep which often is only part-truth. The side effects and dangers of these drugs are down-played or left out altogether. Prescription drugs should only be prescribed after other medical problems have been ruled out.

Learn About 10 Nutrient Deficiencies That Cause Depression and Mood Disorder Symptoms:

If you suffer from depression or mood disorders you may be deficient in one of the nutrients below. Researchers have found that many people who suffer from depression and mood disorders are deficient in not just one nutrient but several, all contributing to the symptoms.

#1: Healthy Food Deficiency? Junk Food Diet

Is your diet filled with sugar, junk foods, sodas, or processed foods? Do you often skip meals. If you suffer from depression or mood disorders, start a food diary of the foods you eat every day. You will find answers to your health problems while doing that. Your shopping cart and refrigerator tell the story of your health. My husband works as a cashier at Walmart. People shopping for their family fill their cart with junk sugar filled cereal, chips, candy, soda, , TV dinners, and over-processed food in general. Seven-Elevens thrive on selling candy, soda, and chips to the eat-on-the-run customers. There are very few fresh vegetables or fruit on the average American’s grocery list. This is why so many Americans are obese, depressed, and suffering from diabetes. If your life is not going well, eating junk food is not going to improve your outlook.

#2: Omega-3 Fatty Acids Deficiency:

These are found in foods such as fish and Flax Seed Oil. A deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids or an imbalance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids may be one of the contributing factors to your depression. Omega 3 Fatty acids are important to brain function and your mental outlook on life. They also help people who suffer from inflammation and pain problems. Researchers have found that many patients with depression and mood disorders are deficient in Omega 3 Fatty Acids. It is important to buy fish oil that has been cold processed and tested for heavy metals and other contamination. It should state that on the label.

#3: Vitamin D Deficiency:

Important to immune function, bones, and brain health. Sunlight is the richest source for natural Vitamin D. The Journal Clinical Nutrition in Jan 21st, 2013 published the result of research that analyzed over 18000 British citizens for Vitamin D deficiencies and associated mental disorders links. They found that a deficiency of Vitamin D was present in patients with depression and panic disorders. The study results stated that people who are deficient in Vitamin D are at higher risk for developing depression later in life. Most seniors are deficient in Vitamin D. Often people working long hours in offices are deficient as well. Get out in the sun. Take a walk during your lunch break or walk your dog. Play a game with your kids outside away from computers and the television. Get out of the house and into the sunshine. Just don’t overdo it if you are sensitive to the sun. Overdoing it is not good either.

#4: B-Vitamins Deficiency:

There is much research in Neuropsychiatry that proves the link between B-Vitamin deficiencies and mood disorders including depression. Buy gel capsules instead of tablets with at least 25 mg for each of the different B- Vitamins included in the formulation.

#5: Zinc , Folate, Chromium, and Iron Deficiencies:

Patients with depression are often found deficient in many nutrients including these. Often today’s foods are sadly lacking in minerals and trace minerals.

#6: Iodine Deficiency:

Iodine is necessary for the thyroid to work properly. The thyroid, part of the endocrine system, is one of the most important glands in your body. The thyroid gland affects every function of the body including body temperature, immune function, and brain function. Iodine is found in foods such as potatoes, cranberries, Kelp, Arame, Hiziki, Kombu, and Wakame. This problem was once solved by using Iodine enriched salt. Today iodine deficiency is again becoming a problem with salt free diets. Salty chips, processed foods, and junk food do not contain iodized salt.

#7: Amino Acids Deficiency: There are 9 necessary amino acids that cannot be manufactured in your body. You must supply them to the body by eating quality food choices.

Amino acids are found in meat, eggs, fish, high quality beans, seeds and nuts. You need to eat a variety of different foods to furnish the body with all the amino acids needed to be healthy. Not all foods contain all nine amino acids. Vegetable food sources for amino acids include Moringa Oleifera leaves. Your brain uses the amino acids found in the food you eat to manufacture neurotransmitters needed for optimal brain function.

What are neurotransmitters and what do they have to do with depression?

Healthy brain function needs the proper balance of neurotransmitters. Some neurotransmitters calm the brain and others excite the brain. Their balance in the brain creates stability of emotions and thinking. Often depression and other mental disorders are caused by imbalances in neurotransmitters. Dopamine, noradrenaline, and GABA are three important neurotransmitters often deficient in depression. Orthomolecular physicians have found that treatment with amino acids including tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and methionine can correct different mood disorders like depression. The Orthomolecular doctor first takes urine and blood samples to test your amino acid levels. Then if he finds imbalances, you will be given amino acid supplements in the optimal dosage to correct the problem. Orthomolecular doctors treat the base cause for the depression or mental symptoms. If it is a nutritional imbalance such as a Omega 3 deficiency, you will be prescribed that supplement. Instead of treating with drugs, they treat the deficiencies that cause the mental symptoms with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

There are tests that prove nutrient deficiencies. The problem is often your standard medicine doctor will not give clearance for the tests, nor will your insurance pay for them. Most doctors are not schooled in nutrition and diet. They have no time to go over your eating and lifestyle habits. Saying that, a few companies and health providers exist who do have preventive health programs. The reality is a majority of people do not get quality preventive healthcare, especially those on Medicaid or Medical.

A nutrient scan will assist in solving nutrient deficiency or toxicity problems. Contact me if you want to do a lab test to assess nutrient deficiencies and toxicities.

Negative thoughts

Question from our client:
My friend always has negative thoughts, I have no idea what to do. Can you help him?

My answer:
Yes! I can.
I will use biofeedback and clinical hypnotherapy to help him.
Many studies have shown that your mood is positive when the left frontal area of your brain is more active than the right frontal area, and that your mood is poor when the right is more active than the left. Biofeedback and clinical hypnotherapy can change your thoughts and your brainwave!
They are completely non-invasive as well as safe.
Add-on service: I will teach the EFT or self hypnosis to my clients too! So they can cope with their problem quite well even I am not with them.
At my centre, Dato Dr and other therapists have been working closely together with me to help my clients.
We really care about our clients and we won't label them.

Success Story (Insomnia - Mdm Wong)

Success Story (Insomnia - Mdm Wong)

I have been having insomnia for the past few months. It is usually triggered by an involuntary jerk during sleep. I do not know the cause of its occurrence, hence underwent MRI and EEG Scanning.

The result from the MRI scanning showed that I had been suffering from slip disc. However that cannot be the cause of my insomnia issue. On the other hand, the EEG scan revealed that I have some unusual spikes near my temporal lobe area.

Upon the release of the result, I decided to try the TCM method. Therefore I signed up for Acupuncture and took on some Chinese medication as well. I also tried physiotherapy; Ultrasound.
I also went to Singapore for further consultation and the doctor revealed that I had neuralgia issue.

Therefore, he recommended me to do laser therapy to stabilize my nerve.  However, I decided not to undergo this process as I was worried about the side-effect that it may cause and the cost was ranging to about RM 20,000.00

Finally my husband convinced me to give a try on Clinical Hypnotherapy. I think it’s not a harm to try and my husband told me that the clinical hypnotherapy that he found was through a website and he choose this therapy because it is convincing, professional and it gives him a sense of confidence.

Although the location was in Kuala Lumpur and we stay in Johor, we didn’t mind to travel weekly for the session since there was a need. The uniqueness about these therapy session was that they actually combine brain trainer with clinical hypnotherapy to deal with my issue. Surprisingly, just after 6 session, my family member and I saw the significant changes in me.

My husband also told me that I became more stable emotionally. No more depression and anxiety. And my behaviour became normal again.

From my personal view, I also found that I became more stable emotionally and had less negative thought. In addition, I also realize that I became more positive now. I am no longer afraid to sleep anymore. This is a significant improvement to me because I can finally experience good sleep again. I have also learnt how to relax and remain calm at night. I managed to do so because the Clinical Hypnotherapist also taught me ‘How to cope with stress, anxiety, and fear by using effective relaxation technique.’

Now, my next goal is to deepen my sleep quality. I will continue to use clinical hypnotherapy, brain trainer and Serumi Ion service to enhance my sleep quality.

How to help someone with depression without drugs?

Compelling research evidence exists that there is often a neurophysiological basis for depression, particularly in people with a family history of depression.

The left frontal area of the brain is associated with positive emotions and approach motivation, which is a desire to be involved with other people. The right frontal area of the brain is more associated with depression and fear, accompanied by motivation to withdraw from and avoid other people. When there is more slow brainwave activity in the left frontal area, this part of the brain is more inactive and the right frontal area is more dominant. Such a person is predisposed to become depressed more easily, to withdraw from other people, and to be anxious.

According to ISNR website, it is interesting that research has found that antidepressants do not correct the type of brainwave pattern that we see above on the left. Thus, medication treatment for depression appears to still leave intact the biological predisposition for becoming more easily depressed when unpleasant life circumstances come along.

I am working in a proactive healthcare centre (non-drug approach) at Setapak as a psychologist. I am supervised by a medical doctor and a PHD level psychologist who specializing in biofeedback for more than 20 years. I am using clinical hypnotherapy and biofeedback methods to help my clients.
Our unique approach for depression appear very promising not only in bringing relief from depression, but in modifying the underlying biological predisposition for becoming depressed. Biofeedback focuses on retraining the brain, for example, reversing the frontal brainwave asymmetry, with the goal of producing an enduring change that does not require people to remain on medication indefinitely. Training often requires about 20 to 22 sessions.
