Treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases in Malaysia

The role of hypnotherapy for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases



Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic disorders of unknown aetiology which are characterized by episodes of exacerbations and remissions. 


Inflammatory bowel disease symptoms vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs. Symptoms may range from mild to severe. You are likely to have periods of active illness followed by periods of remission.
Signs and symptoms that are common to both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis include:
  • Diarrhea. Diarrhea is a common problem for people with IBD.
  • Fever and fatigue. Many people with IBD experience a low-grade fever. You may also feel tired or have low energy.
  • Abdominal pain and cramping. Inflammation and ulceration can affect the normal movement of contents through your digestive tract and may lead to pain and cramping. You may also experience nausea and vomiting.
  • Blood in your stool. You might notice bright red blood in the toilet bowl or darker blood mixed with your stool. You can also have bleeding you don't see (occult blood).
  • Reduced appetite. Abdominal pain and cramping, as well as inflammation, can affect your appetite.
  • Unintended weight loss. You may lose weight and even become malnourished because you cannot properly digest and absorb food.

There is evidence that perceived distress contributes to IBD symptom flares; anxiety and depression are frequently found in patients with the active disease. 
Because there is no cure, treatment has to focus on 
1) Prevention of complications
2) induction/maintenance of remission 
3) Improvement of quality of life. 

Gut-directed hypnotherapy (GHT) has been used successfully in functional gastrointestinal disorders. Few experimental studies and case reports have been published for IBD; GHT increases the health-related quality of life and reduces symptoms. 

Additionally, GHT seems to have an immune-modulating effect and is able to augment clinical remission in patients with quiescent ulcerative colitis.

Use diet and nutrition to prevent and treat mental illnesses


Most people understand that if you have heart disease you should not be scarfing down greasy, cheesy, fried foods like grilled cheese sandwiches and fries. Yet, many people are not aware that mental disorders also may require special diets. In a new article, the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research encourages the recognition of diet and nutrition as central determinants for both physical and mental health.
A balanced diet, these scientists say, is as important to psychiatry as it is to cardiology.
Nutrition “has become a key factor for the high prevalence and incidence of very frequent mental diseases, such as depression,” Dr. Vicent Balanzá, a university lecturer and psychiatrist at La Fe University Hospital, stated in a press release. “It has been proven that the quality of diet and the deficiencies in certain essential nutrients are determining factors for physical and mental health.

What Your Brain Needs

To perform optimally, the human brain requires “an adequate intake of key nutrients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3, essential amino acids, B-group vitamins … vitamin D, and minerals like zinc, magnesium, and iron,” Balanzá said. He points to the Mediterranean diet as providing all of these nutrients and vitamins, while advising people take nutritional supplements if they experience a deficiency.
His past research has focused on neurocognitive functioning in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, yet more recently, Balanzá has examined nutritional interventions aimed at improving cognition. The stated intention of the International Society for Nutritional Research Psychiatry — Balanzá is a key member — is to support scientifically rigorous research into nutritional approaches for both prevention and treatment of mental disorders.
Among the studies highlighted on the society’s website, one offers preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of nutrients in treating ADHD symptoms in adults. A cited article examines a review of multiple studies and finds omega-3 fatty acids may have antidepressant effects in patients with major depressive disorder, though perhaps not “mood-improving” effects for people suffering from non-clinical symptoms of depression. Another study concludes that fermented foods, such as Kimchi and sauerkraut, have beneficial effects on mental health, particularly with regard to depression, via their positive effects on gut microbiota.
“Psychiatry is at an important juncture, with the current pharmacologically focused model having achieved modest benefits in addressing the burden of poor mental health worldwide,” wrote Balanzá and his coauthors in their current article.
The “emerging and compelling evidence for nutrition as a crucial factor in the high prevalence and incidence of mental disorders,” the authors noted, suggests diet be addressed whenever seeking to cure mental illnesses.

[Review] Slow Learner Intervention & Training Program in Malaysia - Lai Case




Lai is having slow learner issue. For years she could not find any help. 

During the Senior Wellness Exhibition at Viva Mall November, 2014, she visited Spectrum of Life booth and did a Brain Assessment. 20 sessions of Brain Trainer was advised for her. 

Within 10 sessions she could see great results.

[Event] Public health talk: Alternative treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at LPPKN








We have been invited to give a talk about alternative treatment for Autism. 
Special thanks to Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) for the invitation.

Today psychologists know that autism is a problem in the way the brain works, not in how people are raised. That discovery has led them to develop medical, educational and behavioral approaches to treatment. Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and relate to others. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together. Most people with autism will always have some trouble relating to others. But early diagnosis and treatment have helped more and more people who have autism to reach their full potential.

Yes, EEG Biofeedback is very useful for ASD.
Reports from caregivers of people with autism suggest people have witnessed improvements in a variety of areas including speech and irritability after EEG biofeedback training. A few scientific reports have highlighted that a demonstrated increase in social interaction may be seen in child with autism following treatment. One study suggested that parents who noticed an improvement continued to see the benefits for at least a year after EEG biofeedback. [Exhibitor] National Cancer Survivors Day 2015


I am here and I care!

It is an honour to be invited to participate in National Cancer Survivors Day 2015 which organized by the National Cancer Society Malaysia. Managing mental health needs is a crucial part for cancer patients or survivors. My role today is to provide brain assessment, support and treatment advice if necessary. 

There is a healthtalk on how the clinical hypnotherapy able to help cancer patients and cancer survivors. In fact, clinical hypnotherapy has proven to be extremely valuable in the treatment of cancer. Hypnosis has been shown to be effective for decreasing chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting in children with cancer. 

Indeed, hypnotherapy is an effective supplement therapy in the management of terminally ill cancer patients in a hospice setting. It is useful in addressing: 
(1) management of anxiety, depression, anger, and frustration; 
(2) management of pain, fatigue, and insomnia; 
(3) management of side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy; 
(4) visualization to promote health improvement. 
By successfully addressing these areas, studies have shown that hypnotherapy improves the individual quality of life and life expectancy. Further, there is a quantifiable cost savings to the hospital in terms of reduced medication and need for medical care.
One of the most well-known techniques involves the use of “positive mental images” of a strong army of white blood cells killing cancer cells. One 10-year follow-up study involving 86 women with cancer showed that a year of weekly “supportive/ expressive” group therapy significantly increased survival duration and time from recurrence to death. Postoperative complications and hospitalizations for the hypnotic intervention group are significantly shorter than the norm.

What is IBS?
IBS is best understood as a long-term or recurrent disorder of gastrointestinal (GI) functioning. It usually involves the large intestine (colon) and small intestine with disturbances of intestinal/bowel (gut) motor function (motility) and sensation. These gut related activities are regulated by the brain. This may also be impaired, which is why IBS is often called a brain-gut disorder. These disturbances can produce symptoms of abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating or a sense of gaseousness, and a change in bowel habits (diarrhea and/or constipation).

The typical features of IBS are generally recognizable by a doctor. The most important first step in treating and managing symptoms is to see your doctor for a confident diagnosis of IBS.

Symptoms Cluster in IBS 
A number of symptoms that occur together characterize irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This may confuse you at first. Plus, symptoms will likely change over time. The changes may seem random. But there is a pattern to symptoms of IBS.
►The key sign or symptom of IBS is pain or discomfort in the abdomen. The abdomen is the area below your chest and above your hips. 
►The other symptoms of IBS relate to your bowel habit. You’ll notice a change in frequency or consistency of stool (diarrhea or constipation). These changes link to the pain.

►The symptoms occur over a long term and come and go over time.
Some or all of IBS symptoms can occur at the same time. Some symptoms may be worse than others.
Abdominal pain is often described as crampy, or as a generalized ache with periods of cramps. Sharp, dull, gas-like, or modest pains are common. The IBS discomfort or pain usually feels better after a bowel movement.

Symptom Patterns Add Up To IBS

Certain signs and symptoms occur with IBS. Symptom-based criteria for IBS emphasize a positive diagnosis rather than extensive tests to rule out all other diseases. No tests confirm the diagnosis of IBS.
A detailed history, physical examination, and limited diagnostic tests help confirm the IBS diagnosis. More extensive testing is reserved for specific situations.

Other Symptoms May Accompany IBS

Persons treated for IBS commonly report upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. About 25% to 50% report...
  • Heartburn
  • Early feeling of fullness (satiety)
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal fullness
  • Bloating
Other GI symptoms also reported include...
  • Intermittent upper abdominal discomfort or pain (dyspepsia)
  • Feelings of urgency (the need to find a restroom fast)
  • Feeling of "incomplete" bowel emptying
Non-GI symptoms also occur. Sometimes, but not always, this may be due to an overlap of IBS with another condition. These symptoms include...
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Sexual dysfunction
Other symptoms tend to occur with more severe IBS such as...
  • Low back pain
  • Headache
Symptoms sometimes seem contradictory, such as alternating diarrhea and constipation. It may help to keep a Symptom Diary so your doctor can see how your symptoms change over time and in relation to diet, stress, and other factors. 
Abnormal functioning of the nerves and muscles of the bowel produce the symptoms of IBS. A "dysregulation" between the brain, the gut, and the central nervous system causes the bowel to become "irritated," or overly sensitive to stimuli. Symptoms may occur even in response to normal events.

Brain: EEG biofeedback to deal with underlying issues 

The causes of anxiety and stress-related disorders such as IBS seem to be a complex interplay of predisposing heredity factors, childhood circumstances, hormonal imbalances and life-events. These disorders often involve an over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Because these disorders involve the activation of our most basic survival responses, often called "fight or flight" response it will always remain difficult to dampen that response. EEG biofeedback works to decrease psychophysiological reactivity and to improve recovery (by teaching the patient to activate the opposing parasympathetic system).

睡眠障礙引頭痛 自律神經失調元凶

「一覺到天亮,一暝大一吋」,但是,如果有失眠入睡困難、半夜醒來不易再睡等情況,恐罹患睡眠障礙,根據台灣睡眠醫學會一項「國人睡眠大調查」結果發現,台灣15至59歲的人口中,平均每5人就有1人深受失眠之苦。尤其值得注意的是,睡眠障礙會會引發偏頭痛。要揪出睡眠障礙造成頭痛的元凶,醫師建議必需兼顧生理與心理健康,尤其是要調整自自律神經失調的困擾。

睡眠障礙元凶 自律神經失調惹禍
為什麼睡眠障礙會引起頭痛?精神科醫師楊聰財表示,其實睡眠障礙只是冰山一角,冰山下的狀況要特別關注,睡眠障礙要從生理因素與心理因素去解決。其中生理因素主要來自自律神經失調,一旦自律神經不穩定,交感神經與副交感神經不協調,交感神經會過盛,引起血壓升高、肌肉緊繃、呼吸心跳加快,在交互影響下,便容易引起頭痛。
至於心理因素引起睡眠障礙,則常見出現慢性焦慮、憂鬱,或慢性壓力感如怒氣。焦慮、憂鬱與怒氣此三種統稱為「情緒障礙」,容易造成頭痛不適。臨床發現,10個有睡眠障礙問題的民眾,約有7、8個與情緒障礙有關。
自律神經失調 女多於男
楊聰財醫師表示,門診曾經收治許多因為出現頭暈、頭重、頭痛的患者求診,主訴特別的是頭痛位置有移動情況,有時頭頂痛,有時單側痛,有時兩邊同時痛,甚至疼痛會往下發展,合併肌肉緊繃、眼睛乾澀、呼吸不順、腹痛等不適症狀,但是進行腦波、心電圖、X光等檢查,卻發現都正常,一時找不到病因,經過進一步診斷才發現是慢性自律神經失調。

自律神經失調該怎麼改善?建議要兼顧生理與心理,照顧身心四個大支柱:即「能睡、能笑、能動、能吃」:
【調整自律神經失調方法】:
1.「能睡」:是指每天最好晚上11點睡覺,早上6點起床,維持正常睡眠。
2.「能笑」:指常保笑容能使腦內啡分泌,有益健康避免頭痛。
3.「能動」:指每周維持333規律運動,每週運動至少3天、每次30分鐘、心跳達到130下。 
4.「能吃」:指睡覺前適度食用包括鮮奶、香蕉與深海魚油等食物,有助於自律神經安定。
此外,平時要養成「說唱做寫」紓壓好方法4要訣,例如每天做深呼吸吐氣、睡前寫快樂日記等。
【醫師小叮嚀】:
楊聰財醫師表示,自律神經失調調整好,睡眠障礙即可降低,但是如果出現睡眠障礙,例如一周中有3天以上睡眠時間不到6小時,或是有入睡困擾,且情況連續兩周以上,影響日常生活,就可能是與情緒障礙影響到睡眠有關,建議可至精神科就醫檢查。
若是明明睡眠超過9小時以上,卻怎麼睡都覺得睡不夠,上班仍容易打瞌睡、精神不濟,則可能與生理有關,例如有睡眠呼吸中止症、打鼾等呼吸道問題,建議到睡眠中心進行睡眠檢查。

10 Ways to Make Memory Rehab Work


Physical exercise can rehabilitate bodies that have grown soft and flabby. Can mental exercise rehabilitate brains that have deteriorated because of disease or age? Maybe.
A published scholarly review has examined the research literature on this issue and arrived at several useful conclusions: 
  1. Focus, Reduce Distractions. The two common causes of forgetting, in both normal people and those with impaired memory, are a) failure to register new information effectively, and b) interference from conflicting sensations and thoughts.
  2. Customize the Rehabilitation Needed. Rehab need to take into account the type of memory therapy and the cause and severity of the impaired memory capability.
  3. Learn in Small, Frequently Repeated Chunks. New information has to be re-packaged for memory-impaired people so that it is in simple, concrete form, in small chunks, and repeated frequently — with patients required to re-state the information and make explicit associations with what they already know. (Notice how this sounds like the way one needs to teach young children).
  4. Practice Attentiveness. Attentiveness to new information can be enhanced by self-cueing, wherein patients remind themselves to be more attentive at crucial moments. This can even be done by creating a conditioned reflex in which a cue signal conditions greater attentiveness. (Notice how this sounds like how you “clicker” train dogs).
  5. Uses Mnemonics. Mnemonic tips and tricks can help. This includes using acronyms, rhymes, stories, and constructing mental images.
  6. Find Ways to Compensate. Even in patients with severe impairments, some aspects of memory, such as subliminal or implicit memory, may have been spared and can be exploited to compensate for the lost ability.
  7. Spread Rehearsals Over Time. Memory rehearsal is more effective if it is spread out over time rather than bunched into a few closely spaced sessions.
  8. Manipulate the Cues. Be more aware of cues you are using. A “vanishing clues” approach can help. For example, in a rehearsal session, cued retrieval might begin with cueing the first three letters of a target word, then repeating later with two, then  one, and eventually no letter cues.
  9. Minimize Error, Lest you Learn the Errors. Trial-and-error learning is generally less effective than learning conditions that minimize error, because error responses can get stored as memories that compete with the right answers. In short, it is better to not know than to generate wrong answers.
  10. Use Memory Crutches. Using external memory aids (sticky notes, wall charts, notebooks, etc.) should help, bearing in mind, however, that using such aids may themselves be a memory task. It is like having a schedule calendar and forgetting to check the calendar. Smart phones and radio paging devices (“NeuroPage”) can be especially helpful because they remind the patient when to check on the stored information. In some patients, repeated use of such aids develops a habit for target tasks and these may even generalize to certain non-target tasks.
These ten approaches are some of the same approaches that work especially well in people with normal memory capabilities. To make them work in patients with impaired memory just takes more effort, patience, and time.

The Health Benefits of Dreams


Dreams, memories, and emotions

The dream -- likely a means of coping with a major life stress --helped Kern, explains researcher Rosalind Cartwright, PhD, professor emeritus of psychology at Rush University in Chicago. “It’s almost like having an internal therapist, because you associate [through dreams] to previous similar feelings, and you work through the emotion related to it so that it is reduced by morning.”

Although some researchers believe dreams are just a byproduct of sleep, others think dreams are important for memory consolidation or conflict resolution. Cartwright has found clues to suggest that dreams may help with mood regulation.
Dreams occur during both REM (rapid-eye-movement) and non-REM sleep, but sleep studies show that brain activity is heightened during REM periods. When sleep-study participants are wakened during the first non-REM period, those who recall their dreams tend to report thinking about a piece of emotional unfinished business. The dreamer may then restate or reshape the problem in a different form during the next REM cycle, and so on, through the night.

Dreaming may help depression

Sleep is without a doubt beneficial. According to the National Sleep Foundation, humans spend more than two hours dreaming each night (with the most vivid dreams occurring during REM sleep). Rats deprived of that precious REM sleep for four days produce fewer nerve cells in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center.
Among humans, dreaming may also help alleviate depression. In sleep studies of recently divorced women with untreated clinical depression, Cartwright and colleagues found that patients who recalled dreams and incorporated the ex-spouse or relationship into their dreams scored better on tests of mood in the morning. And they were much more likely to recover from depression than others who either did not dream about the marriage or could not recall their dreams.
“It really shows that there was an ongoing working through the night in the dream material, and eventually that the depression lifted in those people,” Cartwright says.
Looking back now, Kern says she was highly stressed at the time and the dream helped her realize how much the boy had been controlling her life. “It didn’t solve the problem,” she says, “but it helped put it in perspective.”

耳鸣是迄今治疗最困难的一种耳科疾病,既无有效的药物,也无立竿见影的手术能处置效果。超越上亿的患者至今依然在嗡嗡不息的耳鸣声中挣扎。也屡次报道各种新型技术和方法,虽然有些技术尚处于实验阶段,效果难以界定,有些方法能够初期效果较好,依然需求经过更多、更普遍的实际来论证其疗效的真实性和继续性。


脑波反馈疗法(EEG biofeedback/neurofeedback)是一种以训练脑部功能来增进脑部支配身体各部份动作的复建技术。当脑部功能不建全,或是我们说的发育不完全,那麼由电子脑波图就可以明确的看出来,而这电子脑波图其实就是EEG﹙Electroencephalogram﹚。因此神经回餽主要概念便是基於不断的训练脑部神经的动作,也就是我们讲的脑神经运动,藉由不动的运动,增强脑部的发育,帮助脑神经的动作更完整。EEG biofeedback改善大脑的功能作用明显。对顽固性失眠、神经衰弱、强迫症、焦虑症等神经症、更年期综合症等一系列心身疾病都有独特疗效,作为脑中风后遗症、原发性高血压、考生考期综合症、小儿多动症的辅助治疗手段也有其独到之处和广阔的应用前景。最近研究对药物依赖和药物成瘾者,脑波同步疗法也有一定的治疗作用,目前正在进一步的探索中。

【Natural anxiety treatment Malaysia】Managing Anxiety with EEG Biofeedback

Worrying is natural. In some cases, anxiety can be beneficial, such as before a big sports event or dance recital. However, some of us are overwhelmed by worry on a daily basis. The worry becomes excessive and can interfere with daily tasks. The anxiety or panic felt is gripping for those who have experienced it.
Having an anxiety disorder is difficult and frustrating. It is considered a silent killer and most people who see you upset will just say “calm down” or “stop worrying so much” and not truly understand.
The feeling anxiety creates and the worried thoughts it causes do not have an immediate “off” switch.
The good news is there is a simple, non-drug treatment for the management of anxiety: biofeedback.
The most common types of anxiety disorders are:
  • generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • panic disorder
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • social anxiety disorder (SAD)
  • specific phobias
Although each anxiety disorder is unique, there is a common thread. The loop of anxiety often looks like this: worried thought -> physiological response -> more worried thoughts -> heightened response.
The physiological response is due to adrenaline and other stress hormones rushing through your body, creating the fight-or-flight stance, regardless of any real threat. The threat is almost always perceived and irrational, and the individual is usually aware of this. Anxiety can cause you to feel “out of your mind,” suffocated, scared, upset, stressed, and not in control.
Anxiety is due to environmental causes, genetics, and personal experiences. A common trait among those who have anxiety disorders is the person’s need for control. When the desire to control a situation feels out of reach, this can trigger anxiety.
Highly sensitive people also can experience anxiety in the presence of an overload of stimuli. For example, a person might become overwhelmed and experience panic if they are at a club with loud music, strobe lights, and crowds of people. Even something as harmless as a grocery store can trigger an anxiety attack due to the amount of choices available.
Symptoms vary for each person. They can range from wanting to throw up or wanting to escape, to feeling exhausted, to having migraines, to feeling tense and scared, to feeling like your head is way up in the clouds.

Treating Anxiety Symptoms with Biofeedback

Managing anxiety symptoms is on the path to treating it. For many who suffer from an anxiety disorder, they will usually tell you that it never goes away, but they have learned to control it so that the symptoms are less overwhelming.
Biofeedback therapy is a highly effective research-based treatment for anxiety disorders. The individual is taught how to properly respond to their anxiety and it is one of the ways he or she can learn how to manage and control it without the use of medications.
Biofeedback gives the anxious person the opportunity to view his or her physiological responses to stress. When a person becomes anxious, some of the changes that will be displayed visually and audibly with the use of noninvasive instruments are:
  • increases in heart rate
  • hands becoming cold and clammy
  • rapid or shallow breathing
  • skin temperature
  • muscle tension
  • EEG showing higher activity for hi-beta waves in the brain (these waves increase when the mind is stressed)
  • loss of metabolic activity in frontal lobe (showing higher activity in the emotional centers of the mid-brain)
Biofeedback teaches awareness, profound relaxation skills and ways to manage an anxiety attack, as well as ways to recognize, reduce, and control stress responses. It also teaches the individual how to control the brain’s activity and maintain the proper brainwave levels to achieve a calm and focused state. By returning the body to a healthier physiological state, the “foggy head” that anxiety can cause, as well as the feeling of fear and panic throughout the body, are removed.

【马来西亚头痛治疗】治疗头痛可以不用吃药



据美国《新闻周刊》3月13日报道,
美国医疗体系开始运用“生物反馈”和“EEG biofeedback脑波反馈疗法”等方法,治疗偏头痛,让患者不吃药就能看到明显疗效。 

生物反馈疗法是一种安全的治疗方法,适用于那些因紧张、睡眠紊乱等原因引起的偏头痛。 

在接受生物反馈治疗时,病人遵循电脑发出的指令,学会调节自己身体状态。比如,调节皮肤温度、肌肉力度及脉搏等,从而减轻疼痛,缓解压力。美国马萨诸塞总医院的专家认为,生物反馈疗法主要是减轻患者神经系统的压力、使病人感到放松与安定,这对治疗偏头痛非常奏效。美国新奥尔良头疼中心的专家表示,85%—90%的慢性偏头痛患者,接受生物反馈疗法后效果非常好,同时这还可帮助病人摆脱药物依赖。 

EEG biofeedback脑波反馈疗法与生物反馈疗法相似,


但是通过调节脑电波,帮助患者摆脱偏头痛。 
这是一项无痛,无副作用,安全和非侵入性的科学治疗方法。

进行神经反馈治疗看上去像在玩电子游戏或看电影。患者在医师指导下,把那无痛的电子传感器贴在耳垂和头皮上,用脑电波来启动电脑上的游戏程序。当“好”脑电波明显增加时,屏幕就会显示优秀的信号,并给实验者一些奖励。当“坏”脑电波增强时,游戏或电影速度就会减慢甚至停止。经过一定的训练后,病人的脑神经系统就能逐渐学会使用那些好脑电波,来对付那些可能引发头痛的坏脑电波。神经反馈疗法一般需要进行20—40次,每次30-60分钟。专家认为,EEG biofeedback脑波反馈疗法能达到永久治愈的目的。 

新奥尔良的伊丽莎白被偏头疼折磨已经30年。3年前,接受了生物反馈疗法后,就再也没有犯过病。她说:“生物反馈疗法让我摆脱了所有的止疼片,还教会我放松的技巧。我现在感觉好极了。

[Insomnia Specialist Malaysia] Sleep loss tied to emotional reactions


A person's loss of sleep can be connected to their likelihood of reacting emotionally to a stressful situation.

That is one of the recent findings included in a new book, "Sleep and Affect: Assessment, Theory and Clinical Implications," co-edited by a University of Arkansas psychology professor and his former doctoral student. Affect is a term in psychology that describes a broad range of .
"In our study, we wanted to find out if there was a link between the loss of sleep and our ," said Matthew T. Feldner, a professor of psychology in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "We saw that if a person lost a night of sleep they responded with more emotion to a laboratory 'stressor.' This finding extended previous work that had linked chronic  to anxiety and mood disorders."
Feldner co-edited Sleep and Affect with Kimberly A. Babson, a health science specialist at the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Menlo Park, California. Babson earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Arkansas.
Sleep and Affect summarizes research on the interplay of sleep and various components of emotion and affect that are related to mood disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and depression.
"One of the themes that emerged across these chapters is that certain components of emotion seem particularly linked to sleep," Feldner said. "What we call 'stressors' tend to be more emotionally arousing for people who haven't slept well, and emotional arousal also appears to interfere with ."
Babson conducted sleep-and-affect studies at the U of A under a National Institutes of Health research training fellowship. That research spurred her's and Feldner's interest in a book that synthesizes the latest research into the interrelationships between sleep and affect.
"We present this information in a way that will help clinicians both assess for  and problems related to anxiety or mood, when a patient is seeking treatment for one and maybe not the other," he said. "By improving sleep, we might improve our treatments for anxiety problems."
This book also includes the latest findings in neuroscience related to sleep loss. There appear to be effects of sleep loss on the functioning of the emotional regulation circuit of the brain, Feldner said.
"Some of the neurobiological structures that we think are involved in regulating emotional or affective experiences don't seem to function the same after we lose sleep as they do when we are fully rested," he said.
"Sleep and Affect" is published by Elsevier Publishing.
