Unlocking the Power of the Mind: A Glimpse into Applied Hypnosis at HELP University

Today was an exciting day at HELP University, I introduced psychology students to the fascinating world of Applied Hypnosis!

The highlight? A 10-minute hypno suggestibility test that left everyone wide-eyed in amazement 😲. In just a few minutes, students observed real physiological responses driven by unconscious processes—proof that the mind is far more powerful than we often realize.

The room was buzzing with curiosity. Students asked thoughtful questions, challenged common misconceptions, and explored the science behind hypnotic states. It wasn’t just about therapy—it was about understanding the brain, enhancing mental flexibility, and applying these skills in everyday life, personal growth, and even future careers.

Many participants were so captivated that they inquired about courses in hypnosis—a clear sign that the next generation of hypnotherapy practitioners and mental health innovators is already taking shape.

If you're curious about how hypnosis works, want to master practical mind-body techniques, or explore a unique and meaningful career path in mental health and personal development, our Professional Certificate in Applied Hypnosis could be your perfect first step.

Exploring the Path to Clinical Neurofeedback Training for Future Mental Health Counselors (New Mind Academy & UPSI)

Are you aware that the Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) offers a Master's in Counseling program specializing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling? This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded professionals in mental health, and now, it’s offering an exciting opportunity: an introduction to Clinical Neurofeedback Training in collaboration with New Mind Academy.

I’m delighted to see that these future counselors are eager to explore the pathway to becoming certified Clinical Neurofeedback Practitioners. Neurofeedback is gaining recognition as an innovative tool to help individuals manage various mental health concerns, such as anxiety, ADHD, and stress-related disorders. Through this program, students learn the basics of neurofeedback, from understanding brainwave patterns to how this technology can be ethically integrated into their counseling practice.

With the support of SBCIA, the first Neurofeedback Training Center in Asia, we aim to ensure that neurofeedback is used ethically and responsibly. Neurofeedback training can be a powerful adjunct in fields like neurocounseling, helping clients improve emotional regulation and cognitive functions. However, it’s crucial that practitioners have a solid foundation in mental health and are trained under proper supervision to utilize this technology effectively and ethically.

At New Mind Academy, we’re committed to providing high-quality training for health-related professionals who are interested in enhancing their practice with neurofeedback. With the right guidance and training, these students can integrate neurofeedback into their counseling sessions, offering clients a holistic approach to mental health care.

World Mental Health Day | Workplace Mental Health and Well-being Support Malaysia

Let's celebrate World Mental Health Day! This year's theme is Mental Health in the Workplace. Yes, it is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace! New Mind Brain Health Centre’s services align with the theme of World Mental Health Day and support mental health through primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies in several key ways:

Promoting Workplace Mental Health and Well-being (Primary Prevention)

The theme emphasizes the connection between mental health and work environments, calling for workplaces to be safe and supportive of mental health. New Mind Brain Health Centre’s focus on unconscious processes, applied neuroscience, trauma-informed hypnotherapy, and psychoeducation for achieving peak performance contributes directly to maintaining and enhancing employee well-being. This approach aligns with primary prevention by promoting mental wellness and preventing the onset of mental health issues through proactive measures that reduce workplace stress and mental health risks.

Preventive Mental Health Measures (Primary and Secondary Prevention)

The WHO message calls for preventive actions in the workplace to protect mental health and prevent crises. New Mind Brain Health Centre offers preventive services such as stress management workshops, neurofeedback training, and burnout prevention. These initiatives not only serve as primary prevention (promoting mental wellness and preventing mental health issues before they arise) but also act as secondary prevention, helping to detect early signs of stress and burnout. By addressing these issues before they escalate, organizations can intervene early, mitigating the risk of more serious mental health problems.

Supporting Stress and Emotional Wellness (Secondary and Tertiary Prevention)

Addressing poor mental health in the workplace, as mentioned in the WHO guidelines, includes focusing on factors such as stress, burnout, and emotional regulation. New Mind’s Hypnobath sessions, neurofeedback therapy, and self-hypnosis training offer secondary prevention interventions that help individuals manage emerging mental health challenges, such as stress and emotional dysregulation. Additionally, these services serve as tertiary prevention by supporting individuals who may already be experiencing mental health issues, offering them strategies to manage their conditions and prevent further deterioration, thereby promoting recovery and resilience.

Holistic Interventions for Mental Health (Tertiary Prevention)

The Centre’s integration of neurofeedback, biofeedback, psychoeducation, training, and hypnotherapy provides holistic care that fosters emotional, mental, and physical well-being. We collaborate closely with psychiatrists, in-house registered counselors, in-house neurofeedback trainers, and AHPM-registered hypnotherapists to offer comprehensive workplace mental health wellness support. This collaborative approach supports tertiary prevention by helping individuals manage ongoing mental health conditions, reduce the impact of chronic stress or emotional disorders, and prevent relapse. These interventions are crucial for maintaining long-term mental health and enhancing workplace productivity and resilience, even for those with existing mental health concerns.

Workplace Workshops and Training (Primary and Secondary Prevention)

The WHO guidance encourages training managers and employees on mental health issues. New Mind Brain Health Centre’s workshops, covering topics like occupational health psychology psychoeducation, trauma-informed care, and mindfulness for emotional wellness and brain health, align with primary prevention by promoting awareness and mental health literacy. They also serve as secondary prevention by equipping employees and managers with tools to identify early signs of mental health challenges and take appropriate action to support their well-being within the workplace.

Discover the Healing Power of Hypnotherapy in Cancer Care: A Natural Way to Manage Stress, Surgery, and Treatment Side Effects

When you're facing the challenges of cancer treatment, both physically and emotionally, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. While traditional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are necessary, they often bring along intense stress, anxiety, and difficult side effects. That’s where hypnotherapy can make a real difference—helping you find calm, resilience, and comfort when you need it most.

As a complementary therapyhypnotherapy works alongside your medical treatments to improve your overall well-being, reduce discomfort, and empower you throughout your cancer journey.

A Personal Message from Dr. Hiro Koo

Hello, I’m Dr. Hiro Koo, a trauma-informed hypnotherapist. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many cancer survivors, helping them overcome emotional and physical challenges with hypnotherapy. Recently, I was honored to be invited by the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Department to speak on this very topic, where I shared how hypnotherapy is transforming the lives of patients during their cancer treatment.

Every day, I see how hypnotherapy helps my patients regain a sense of control over their bodies and emotions—whether it’s preparing mentally for surgery, managing treatment side effects, or simply finding a space of calm during an incredibly stressful time.

Let me walk you through how hypnotherapy can complement your cancer treatment and support your healing journey.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help You During Cancer Treatment?

1. Easing Stress and Anxiety

A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and the stress and anxiety that follow are often overwhelming. Hypnotherapy offers a space where you can deeply relax, allowing your mind and body to release tension and stress. By addressing the emotional toll of cancer, we can help reduce anxiety levels, leaving you feeling more in control and peaceful during this challenging time.

2. Supporting Pre and Post-Surgery

Facing surgery can bring up a lot of fear and uncertainty. With hypnotherapy, I help patients mentally prepare for surgery by guiding them into a calm, focused state that reduces anxiety and enhances the body’s natural healing response. Post-surgery, hypnotherapy aids in pain management, speeds recovery, and helps patients regain a positive outlook as they heal.

3. Alleviating Treatment Side Effects

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy, while critical to fighting cancer, often come with side effects like nausea, fatigue, and pain. Hypnotherapy combines with the cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy approach, we offer a natural way to manage these side effects, helping you feel more comfortable and better equipped to handle your treatment. Through guided visualization and relaxation techniques, we can work together to ease the discomfort and improve your overall well-being.

4. Building Emotional Resilience and Cope with Traumatic Stress

Cancer is not just a physical journey; it’s an emotional one too. Hypnotherapy helps you develop inner strength and emotional resilience, which is vital for coping with the ups and downs of treatment as well as the potential traumatic stress responses. Whether it’s managing fear, sadness, or frustration, hypnotherapy can empower you to stay positive and strong, even when things feel tough.

The Science Behind Hypnotherapy in Cancer Care

You might wonder how hypnotherapy works in the context of cancer care. Research has shown that hypnotherapy can help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain, making it a valuable tool in cancer treatment. It’s widely recognized in integrative oncology programs around the world for its ability to improve patient outcomes by enhancing emotional and physical well-being.

I’ve seen firsthand how patients feel more empowered and at ease when hypnotherapy is part of their treatment plan. By working with your subconscious mind, we can create positive changes in how you respond to stress, pain, and discomfort—making your cancer treatment journey more manageable.

Ready to Learn More About Hypnotherapy for Cancer Care?

If you’re interested in how hypnotherapy can complement your cancer treatment and help you manage stress, anxiety, surgery, or side effects, I’m here to guide you.

Cancer may be a challenging chapter in your life, but you don’t have to face it alone. Hypnotherapy offers a gentle yet powerful way to support your body and mind throughout treatment. Let’s work together to improve your well-being and bring more peace and comfort into your life.

China's Rise in Brain-Computer Interface Technology Conference 2024: A Global Collaboration with Experts from Australia, Italy, Malaysia, and Beyond

In China, brain-computer interface technology, especially groundbreaking innovations like neurofeedback, has quickly become one of the most transformative fields of development and supported by government there. The government is fully backing these advancements, recognizing their enormous potential to reshape both the tech and healthcare landscapes. Over recent years, we’ve seen an impressive rise in Chinese enterprises and medical institutions diving headfirst into this frontier, making remarkable progress in both research and practical applications. As a result, China is positioning itself as a trailblazer in brain-computer interface technology, setting new benchmarks for global innovation in this space.

Yet, the roots of this technology stretch beyond China’s borders. Around 30 years ago, the seeds of neurofeedback technology were planted in Southeast Asia, thanks to my late mentor, Dr. Kang. He had the foresight to bring this revolutionary concept from Western countries, introducing it to Singapore and Malaysia when it was still a niche field. Dr. Kang, a true visionary, led a small but dedicated team, pioneering its early use across the region. Under his guidance, the foundations were laid for what would become a flourishing field with wide-reaching impact across various sectors.

At this seminar, I had the honor of sharing the rich history of neurofeedback in Singapore and Malaysia, recounting its gradual but steady rise from a relatively unknown technology to something widely embraced in medical and mental wellness circles. This journey was not undertaken alone. Alongside me in this exploration of the field’s past and future were an impressive array of professionals: clinical psychologists from Australia, Italy, and Hong Kong; child psychiatrists from Indonesia; and a diverse mix of medical doctors and neuroscientists from around the world. Each of these experts has brought their unique perspectives and contributions, further enriching the field and helping to propel it forward.

Together, we reflected on the milestones that brought us here. This isn't just a tale of technological advancement—it’s a powerful narrative about global collaboration, vision, and the relentless pursuit of innovation. From a small group of pioneers to a thriving international community, the evolution of neurofeedback is a testament to the endless possibilities that arise when the brightest minds come together. As we look ahead, the future of brain-computer interface technology is brighter than ever, promising to break barriers and redefine what we know about human potential.

New Mind Brain Health Centre, Bangsar South

Biofeedback Federation of Europe - BFE Meeting 2024 - Conference Speaker

In the loving European country of Slovenia (sLOVEnia), my presentation concluded successfully. I shared insights on utilizing applied neuroscience technology and unconscious processes exploration methods to encourage more people to focus on the importance of preventive mental and physical health interventions and corporate mental health training for public health. The positive feedback and recognition from the attendees after the presentation were truly heartwarming.

It was an absolute honor to have Dr. Donald Moss, a distinguished authority in the field of hypnosis and former president of the Society of Psychological Hypnosis under the American Psychological Association's Division 30, introduce my presentation topic and personal background. Dr. Moss is a highly influential practitioner and scholar in the field of hypnosis and psychology, and I have long admired his innovative therapeutic approach combining various adjunctive therapies with psychotherapy interventions.
Through his introduction, I discovered that Dr. Moss also places great importance on sub-health issues and preventive psychological well-being. He also took note of the recent Newsletter from APA Division 30 featuring my background and the current state of hypnosis in Malaysia, which greatly inspired and moved me.
As a hypnotherapist, the events of these past few days have been incredibly touching and comforting moments in my professional career. This journey of learning and sharing reaffirmed that my decade-long dedication and persistence have been worthwhile. I hope that my life experiences can also inspire those who are fighting for their dreams.
